Carl Wilkens was the country director of the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) in Rwanda in April 1994, when he decided to remain as the only American working to shelter people from the genocide there. He remained in Rwanda for the next 1 ½ years helping rebuild after the conflict and now works in the U.S. to promote awareness of genocide in places like Darfur as well as empowering grass roots activism with a global mission through the organization he founded, World Outside My Shoes.
