Hjálmar W. Hannesson is the Ambassador of Iceland to the United States. He has served a variety of diplomatic posts including Ambassador to China, Canada, and Germany as well as serving as vice-president of the United Nations General Assembly and a number of U.N. and NATO positions. Icelandic banks were the hardest hit by the global financial crisis as all of the major banks collapsed, posing significant challenges for the government and society.
